When you’ve decided to take the plunge in the IT sector, you tend to be filled with expectations and lacking clues on how to start. The network is filled with open positions and analysts point out that only in Spain, around 10k jobs related with IT were being offered in 2018. But, how? What? Why? These are the main questions that may accompany you before deciding to enter this world.

One of the main premises to take the plunge is to know that most enterprises have great difficulties finding adequate candidates to occupy IT positions, which is kind of contradictory when you look at the current unemployment rate in Spain. But the most wanted profiles are STEM ones (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) and these are skills that companies lack nowadays.

Just like STEM education is key, the next step is knowing which roles are being demanded: Cybersecurity, Agile, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cloud… Knowing what’s being looked for the most will help you decide where to orientate your career, without losing sight of what you like and enjoy doing. Once you have made the decision, it is crucial to acquire knowledge from this particular field, either by Postgraduate studies, specialized courses or lectures and events filled with experts. This will differentiate you from other profiles and also make you a highly employable professional.

IT Sector offers a great deal of roles and fields, and this may help you to answer your professional concerns: there is not a sole way to access to this sector, nor established paths. In order to take the plunge you have to be flexible, you need to be able to adjust and be up to date with everything related with IT. Technology evolves rapidly and you can become obsolete quite quickly. Plus, nowadays, changes in the working environment are common and they require you to be able to take on to new projects, challenges and functions.
